Sana Elache Legacy Community Engagement Award
Lasha Barbosa
Lasha Barbosa is a passionate artist, mentor, and advocate based in Fort McMurray, Alberta. Lasha uses her creative talents to inspire and uplift, while mentoring aspiring artists, particularly within the ASL community. As both a brain tumor survivor and a non-verbal adult, Lasha’s journey has shaped her mission to help others overcome adversity, becoming a beacon of hope for many in the community.
After her brain surgery, Lasha and her husband, Chris, co-founded the ‘Fort Mac Strong’ Brain Tumor Walk, which has proudly supported the Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada for the past three years. This annual event raises vital funds for research, care, and development for brain tumor warriors. Alongside this, Lasha has expanded her postoperative care package initiative, now in its fifth year, to offer love, comfort, and essential aids to those recovering from surgeries—not only brain tumor survivors but also others in the community who need support during their healing journey. These care packages have reached people worldwide and right within Fort McMurray, providing an open ear and compassion at critical times in their lives.
Lasha’s dedication to her community also shines through her leadership in organizing the HeartSpark Afternoon Tea fundraiser. Beyond raising funds for the empowerment of young girls, Lasha spearheaded fundraising efforts for a local young brain tumor warrior, helping to ease the financial burden on her family during treatments in the USA and raising awareness for her condition.
Through her art, advocacy, and community initiatives, Lasha embodies the spirit of leadership, volunteerism, and engagement.
