Multicultural Association of Wood Buffalo

Red Dress Day

May 5 is a National Day of Awareness that honours the lives, stories and spirits of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirited people across Canada.

MCA Outreach Activities

Each year, the Multicultural Association of Wood Buffalo hosts Red Dress Doll workshops at various schools throughout the Wood Buffalo region leading up to Red Dress Day.

These workshops aim to raise awareness about the above issues. In these workshops, students learn about the meaning behind the red dress and make paper dolls wearing Red Dresses that can then be hung outside in acknowledgement of Red Dress Day.

In 2025, MCA’s Indigenous Outreach Coordinator facilitated one of these workshops for a grade 5 class from Dr. Clark public school.

Red Dress Day is a National Day of Awareness that takes place every year on May 5 to honour the lives, stories, and spirits of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirited People across Canada.

Together, we stand with their families and communities—bearing witness, raising our voices, and calling for justice and systemic change. we wear red and display red dresses in a powerful act of solidarity and remembrance.

We wear red as traditionally in Indigenous culture, the colour red is used to call the spirits of missing and murdered women and girls back home to their loved ones.

There are many ways you can help take action in acknowledgement of Red Dress Day! Here are just a few ideas on what you can do:

  • Wear red to show your solidarity
  • Listen to the stories of survivors and their families
  • Attend local vigils, walks and events
