Groundhog Day (Canada, USA)

February 2

Derives from the superstition that if a groundhog emerges from its burrow on this day and sees its shadow, it will retreat to its den for another six weeks of winter. If the groundhog does not see its shadow, then spring will arrive early.

In Canada, there are a few popular groundhogs, such as Wiarton Willie of Wiarton, Ontario and  Shubenacadie Sam from Shubenacadie Wildlife Park, Nova Scotia. Alberta’s groundhog is Balzac Billy.

In USA, one of the most popular groundhogs celebrated on this day is Punxsutawney Phil from Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania.
