The Multicultural Association of Wood Buffalo (MCA) was established in 1985 to support cultural groups and new comers through programs and events, and to foster cross-cultural awareness and understanding. We are currently seeking Bilingual Translators to provide translation services for our clients throughout the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo.
The MCA is committed to helping and supporting cultural groups and newcomers through programs, events and services. The MCA currently offers interpretation and translation services to residents of the Wood Buffalo region in over 45 languages but are looking to expand our current database of community interpreters and translators. We are continuously looking for more translators and interpreters to meet the growing, and linguistically diverse population of the region.

As a Casual Community Interpreter and Translator, you will be responsible for interpreting, translating and providing clear communication between individuals and organizations who do not share a common language. Please note that 'Casual' in this context refers to a flexible work arrangement on an on-call and as-needed basis, not a full-time or part-time employee. You will work in various settings, including medical, educational, and social services, providing accurate and sensitive interpretation and translation services.
- Provide on-site, face-to-face and telephone interpretation for clients in various settings.
- Translate documents, maintaining the original material's content, context, and style.
- Prior experience or formal training and testing in interpretation or translation is preferred but not required.
- Relay concepts and ideas between languages effectively.
- Ensure that all interpretations and translations are accurate, clear, and unbiased.
- Help to foster positive relationships with community members and partners through a commitment to excellent customer service.
- Maintain confidentiality of sensitive information at all times.
- Collaborate with other interpreters and translators to support large-scale community projects.
- Stay updated with relevant terminology, language trends, and cultural nuances.
- Must be 18 years of age or older.
- Working proficiency in English and one (or more) other languages, with strong verbal and written skills.
- Candidates must be able to travel either by car or public transportation to the location of any in-person assignments.
- Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
- Legally authorized to work in Canada and must reside in Fort McMurray.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
- A university diploma or equivalent and relevant certification in linguistics or language studies is a plus.
